A Masterpiece of Traditional Craftsmanship – “Johannes the Resting Woodcutter”
“Johannes the Resting Woodcutter” embodies serenity and relaxation after a hard day’s work. This extraordinary figure tells the story of an exhausted but satisfied woodcutter. After a long and strenuous day, he rests on his axe. His relaxed posture and detailed facial expression give this figure a unique and expressive character.
Origin & History
This historical model was designed around 1900 by Bernhard Strobel. After the Strobel company ceased operations, the Griebel manufactory took over production. Due to the complex manufacturing process, production was later discontinued. In 2021, the young team at Zwergstatt Gräfenroda decided to revive this impressive figure with all its original details.
Craftsmanship & Quality
Johannes is made from high-quality German clay and consists of 10 carefully crafted individual parts. These are assembled with the highest precision. The manufacturing process takes several days, as each step is carried out meticulously by experienced artisans. After firing at 1922°F (1050°C), each figure is hand-painted. Multiple layers of paint give it depth and a striking appearance.
A special highlight is the application of the old technique of the hand-shaped beard. This craftsmanship had long been forgotten. Zwergstatt Gräfenroda has consciously revived this traditional technique. The intricate process gives each figure a unique, lifelike character, making it a true work of art.
Uniqueness & Collector’s Value
The detailed design, elaborate craftsmanship, and authentic reproduction make this garden gnome an exclusive collector’s item. Johannes is not just a decoration; he is a symbol of traditional craftsmanship and attention to detail. To ensure the authenticity and value of this special figure, each “Johannes the Resting Woodcutter” comes with a certificate of authenticity, including the date of its painting.
Weatherproof, but not Frostproof
Our garden gnomes are weather-resistant and can be displayed outdoors all year round. However, to maintain their beauty over time, they should be protected from prolonged moisture and frost.
